Invisalign is a clear alternative to braces, and is a far less intrusive method for straightening your teeth. It consists of sets of teeth aligners that are gradually swapped out over a period of between 1 and 3 years, depending upon how much treatment is needed. The aligners can be removed to eat and clean your teeth, and if you have a special event.
What is the procedure?
Moulds are made of your teeth by your dentist at the start of the treatment period, and based off of those moulds aligners are made that will gradually move your teeth into the desired position. The aligners are worn for two weeks at a time, and then swapped for the next set in order to keep your teeth moving.
You will have regular orthodontic check-ups throughout the process, every six to eight weeks. The checks will make sure the process is going smoothly, and if any changes to the aligners are required they can be made.
What are the other options?
Invisalign is a direct alternative to braces, and it is a far less intrusive and easier process. The aligners (when you are wearing them) are far less visible than even invisible braces, and they can be removed if you want to for special events.
You can also eat whatever you want with Invisalign, while with braces you need to avoid foods like nuts and apples. In addition, it is much easier to keep your teeth clean. Braces are, however, recommended if you need large adjustments to your teeth.
If the only purpose behind Invisalign is cosmetic, especially if only very minor straightening is required, then it might be easier to just get porcelain veneers. The veneers can be fitted in two to three visits to our clinic, and will make your teeth appear perfectly straight instantly, as well as white and shiny.
